Bay joins beach sweep

MORE than 4,000 volunteers nationwide are expected to join the country’s biggest ever beach survey this weekend – including people around Morecambe Bay.

The Marine Conservation Society’s annual ‘Beachwatch’ litter survey and clean-up takes place on Saturday and Sunday.

Half Moon Bay at Heysham and Scalestone Point, Morecambe, are two of the beaches included in a list of 360 in the UK in the event – part of a continuing campaign against beach litter.

And the society says it is still not too late for people to join in and survey more beaches to tackle the growing tide.

Spokesman Emma Snowden says: “This is your chance to get involved. Information collected will help MCS tackle the sources of litter and campaign to reduce the most common items ending up on our beaches.”

• Last year’s Beachwatch saw more than 2,700 bags of litter collected from 350 beaches. The survey recorded an average of 2,054 pieces of litter per kilometre on UK beaches, which equates to two items for every metre of beach.
