FRESH consultations have been demanded over the controversial proposed closure of a Haslingden thoroughfare.

Proposals to shut Gallaghers Gates, off Manchester Road, amid allegations that the alley has become a haven for drug dealers and yobs, have bitterly divided the community.

Residents say their lives have been blighted by anti-social behaviour in the ginnel, with nearly 100 incidents recorded by police there in the last two-and-a-half years.

Backed by Rossendale Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, they wanted the gates to be closed from 7pm to 7am.

The alleyway links Manchester Road with the Dale Street public car park and the estate beyond.

Trish Ellins, Rossendale council community safety officer, said: "Most of these incidents are happening in the early hours and this is a matter of concern to residents in this alley."

But opponents, who collected a 769-name petition against the move, say the problems have been exaggerated.

A protesters spokesman said: "I have lived in Haslingden for 40 years and I have never seen anything up that alley.

"These gates have been put up illegally."

Councillors agreed to call for further consultation with local residents and businesses, on the need for the gates, before any final decision is taken.
