Offenders help out furry friends

OFFENDERS in the district have been drafted in to help a local animal sanctuary.

Six offenders at a time are helping to build a new exercise pen for the dogs at Animal Care centre, Blea Tarn, Lancaster.

The pen will house activity equipment such as jumps and tunnels and offenders will also be laying paths, helping to build and creating new areas for goats and unwanted rabbits.

Lancashire Probation's unpaid work practice manager Julie Barlow says offenders will be given a chance to put 'something back' into the community.

Vanessa Walling, resources manager at Lancaster Animal Care says the help from the offenders will be welcomed.

She says: "As a registered charity it is often difficult to find funds to finance large projects so having the unpaid workers on site will make a huge difference to how much we can achieve."

Anyone can suggest work projects for offenders to do - apply online at www.probation-lancashire.org.uk. All work schemes must be for public or charity/ non-profit community benefit.
