ROSSENDALE police are rolling out a two-month campaign to tackle crime over Christmas.

They believe Operation Shepherd will stop uninvited guests taking early Christmas presents.

Crime prevention officer PC Phil Buck said: "Some people may visit friends and family this Christmas and we are asking that they protect their property before they go.

"Firstly, don't leave valuable items on display.

"Secondly, milk bottles on a doorstep and piles of papers and post behind the door advertise an empty house. Cancel paper and milk deliveries before you go and get a trusted neighbour, or family member, to call round and move the post.

"Also, consider investing in some time delay plugs. These will switch on lights, televisions and radios whilst you are away, giving the impression that someone is at home.

"And finally, contact your local Community Beat Manager, or Police Community Support Officer, and let them know when you are going."
