A motorist who tried to "second guess" his alcohol level got it wrong and will lose his job as a result, a court was told.

And Andrew Church-Taylor, defending, told Blackburn magistrates that a lower drink-drive limit would have assisted his client.

"There is talk of reducing the level in blood from 80 to 50 and that would stop people trying to second guess what they can drink," said Mr Church-Taylor.

"My client drank what he thought he could drink before he would be over the limit.

"However the common misconception doesn't take into account, size, weight, what the individual had had to eat, their level of exercise and a whole host of variables.

Paul Leaver, 48, of Montague Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol. He was fined £200 with £60 costs and banned from driving for 12 months.

The court heard Leaver gave a reading of 50 against the legal limit of 35.
