ACCRINGTON'S Christmas lights were switched on with a bang last night as a spectacular fireworks display signalled the beginning of the festive period.

Hundreds of revellers braved the icy conditions to see appearances from Spice Girls tribute act Spice Unite as well as the cast of the town's pantomime Jack in the Beanstalk.

Spice Unite braved the cold in skimpy outfits but halfway through their set gave in to the elements and put coats on.

Performing arts students from Accrington and Rossendale College also took to the stage to belt out some seasonal songs before the switch was flicked for the lights.

Hyndburn Mayor Tony Dobson did the honours along with Sporty, Posh, Ginger, Scary and Baby.

Coun Dobson thanked the crowds for their enthusiasm from a stage outside Accrington Town Hall.

He said: "The performers have all been excellent. It's great to see so many people here."

The biggest cheer of the night greeted a huge fireworks display above the Arndale Shopping Centre after the lights had been turned on.

Events began at 6.30pm. Many shops in the town stayed open until 8pm to mark the occasion.
