A SAMURAI sword-wielding maniac has been jailed for over three years after attacking a man in the street.

Jahangir Khan, 34, left a 21-year-old man with a three-inch gash to his head but police said he was "very lucky" not to be more seriously injured.

Police said Khan, of Park Road, Accrington, attacked the man in the street in the summer in an "unprovoked" assault.

Burnley Crown Court was told that Khan, a married father of three, has already served jail terms for burglary, robbery and violent disorder.

He pleaded guilty to wounding and was jailed for three years and three months.

His victim had to undergo treatment in hospital but his injuries were not serious.

Police said he was walking along Countess Street near Blockbuster Video in Accrington town centre when he was attacked at 7pm on June 19.

After the case, Det Sgt Paul Rudd said Khan pulled up in a green hatchback before jumping out of the vehicle, confronting his victim and attacking him.

He ran off and abandoned the sword, which was later recovered by police. The attack happened in broad daylight and Khan was arrested a day later.

DS Rudd said: "The victim was lucky his injuries were not much more serious. This was a completely unprovoked attack."
