BLACKBURN College's record label On Song has worked with a chart band for a live recording session.

Up-and-coming rock outfit Boy Kill Boy were at the college last week.

The East London band released their debut single Suzie in May 2005, and reached number 17 in the UK chart.

Since then, the band has performed at the Reading and Leeds Festival, the NME New Music Tour as well as recently appearing on BBC2's Never Mind the Buzzcocks.

Signed by Mercury Records, who have formed a unique partnership with Blackburn College, the band enlisted the help of 21 BTEC national diploma media students at the college to film and record a live TV session for a national student TV channel last Monday, to promote their new single.

Boy Kill Boy's lead singer Chris Peck said: "It's really inspiring to see students getting so heavily involved in initiatives such as these.

"Their enthusiasm and professionalism has been phenomenal which has made it a very positive experience for us.

"I'd like to wish all the students involved in the session the best of luck with their chosen careers."

This is a first initiative of its kind which has seen major record labels such as Universal, Atlantic and Island contacting Blackburn College, whose media centre is now being viewed in the industry as one of the best in the UK.

Students are offering creative packages for less than £500, which includes the recording, press shots and the offer of a graphic design service for album covers.

BTEC media student, Greg Kynoch, 18, from Darwen said, "Working on the session has been great experience and I hope to be involved in many more.

"I was responsible for the vision mixing at the sessions, which is a crucial part. "

Media lecturer Jamie Holman said, "It's a really exciting time for On Song, we've done three recording sessions in the last two weeks, that have included broadcasts for channel 4, and are delighted to have been involved with Boy Kill Boy's session."

The college launched On Song in October last year.
