A BURNLEY man killed himself by injecting a hit of heroin which was almost double the lethal limit, an inquest heard.

Jason Stuart Charles Cawtherley, 36, of Anglesey Avenue, died on March 21, 2007.

The inquest at Burnley Magistrates Court heard his wife, Annette Susan Cawtherley, tell how she found him in the bath.

He had left her a note in her bedroom and £80 in cash.

There was also a burnt spoon on the window sill.

Pathologist Dr Zuhair Twaij, who conducted the post mortem examination, told the inquest that Mr Cawtherley had inflamed lungs and 790mcg of morphine in the blood.

He said the lethal limit is 400mcg.

Mrs Cawtherely said her husband had been using amphetamines and had been introduced to heroin.

It became a habit so he was prescribed methadone in order to wean addicts off the class A drug.

She said: "He never really conquered the amphetamine addiction because there were problems with the marriage.

"I had my sons living with me and they were my priority."

She said she could not have him back because he was not making any progress with rehabilitation.

"He had overdosed a few times.

"Once at Manchester Airport he was found on the bridge. He also tried to inject petrol.

"He was very depressed. He didn't know who to turn to for help," she said.

Coroner Richard Taylor said: "I have the picture of a very troubled young man who was trying to cope with his demons but was unable to.

"His family were trying to be tough on him and he was finding that hard too.

"Clearly he left a note and there was double the amount of heroin that would kill.

"My verdict is that he took his own life."
