A TRAVELLERS' site which has been set up on green belt land without planning permission, is to be closed down.
The fields, off Sough Lane, Oswaldtwistle are "a hell of a mess" a meeting of Hyndburn planning committee heard.
Local residents packed the meeting to oppose the development and handed over a petition with 270 signatures.
Caravans and a septic tank have already been installed at the site off Haslingden Old Road, which lies between Blackburn and Oswaldtwistle.
The operators had wanted to increase the size to include six caravans, two utility blocks and a car park. Much of the car park has now been put in place. The planning committee turned down the development unanimously calling the application "clearly inappropriate" for the green belt.
Now Hyndburn Council have ordered that the field is returned to its original state before the caravans arrived.
