A BODY of a man has been discovered in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Emergency services were called to the canal near Yorkshire Street and Centenary Way in Burnley, at around 9am yesterday.

Police officers and fire and rescue teams were seen near the Tesco store in the town.


A police spokesman said: "We were called around 8.55am on Saturday to reports a body had been found in the canal close to Yorkshire Street, Burnley.                        

"Emergency services attended with the body of a man sadly recovered from the water

"The body has been identified as a man in his 40s from Burnley and next of kin have been informed.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file has been passed to the coroner.

"Anyone with information can contact police on 101 quoting log 0377 of January 4."

A passerby said there was a large police presence near the Tesco supermarket and a fire engine was nearby.
She said: "There was also a vehicle towing a dingy.

"It's very sad."
