ANGRY residents have slammed shameless fly-tippers for dumping rubbish at a picturesque beauty spot.

The piles of waste, which include tyres, burned-out fridges and bricks, were left scattered across land behind the old Rishton paper mill.

One resident, Guy Howard, said there had been a problem for several years with fly-tipping on the spot, known locally as The Fishing Lodge.

Lancashire Telegraph:

He has taken to Facebook to post a video of the waste on the spot which is popular with dog walkers and for fishing.

Mr Howard, 47, who lives in Hermitage Street, and discovered the waste on Tuesday afternoon, said: “I came across the rubbish while I was out walking my dog.

Lancashire Telegraph:

“It’s always the same, the rubbish has been there for several years and it has got worse.

“Someone came to clear it not that long ago but it’s come back again now," he added.

“I’ve no idea who does it but it does detract from what is a beauty spot and is a real blight.

“It’s a shame people have to spoil the area for others.

“There are tyres, general waste, burned-out fridges and bricks which have been dumped there.

“I have complained to the council about it,” he added.

Lancashire Telegraph:

It is not known who owns the land.

Cllr Michael Miller, who represents Rishton on Hyndburn Council, said he will visit the site and report it to the council.

He said: “I’m not aware of this but I’ll go down myself and raise it with the authority.

"Things like this are a blight on society.

“It’s not an environment I want to live in.”

Hyndburn Council have been approached for comment.

The paper mill at the bottom of Hermitage Street has been disused for a number of years and has had problems with fires in recent years.
