A FUNDRAISING walk for a historic landmark which will feature in a special documentary film has been re-arranged after moorland fires subsided.

The event to help find £100,000 to repair Darwen Tower was originally scheduled for July 22 but had to be postponed after heather and peat caught fire.

Now The Big Tower Walk will take place on Sunday, August 26.

The event has been arranged by WORK at Over Darwen House who are making a documentary This Is Darwen in which the walk will be a key feature.

Cameras will be filming from 11am to noon.

The producers have asked Darwen walkers to to set off from their normal walking routes at 10am and head up to the 120-year-old 85ft high tower.

Earlier this year an inspection revealed loose sections of concrete and surrounding masonry on the underside of the tower’s top viewing platform.

It was temporarily closed for short-term safety repairs, reopening at the beginning of June.

More work needs to be done to secure the safe use of the tower in the future.

The Friends of Darwen Tower group has estimated the repairs will cost around £100,000 for permanent repairs, and launched a fundraising campaign to find the cash.

Darwen Rotary Club is working with Blackburn with Darwen Council to explore a possible Heritage Lottery bid to help with the cost.

Walk organiser Samantha Taylor said: “I’m really looking forward to walking up to the tower with my fellow Darreners.

“It’s going to be great to see everyone up at the tower together and we should hopefully capture some great footage for our film."

Parts of the walk will be captured by drones.

The film will be about the history of the Jubilee Tower, which was built in 1898 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and to celebrate residents’ victory for the right to have access to the moor decades ago.

It is hoped more than 2,000 people will take part.
