MP Nigel Evans has welcomed Sir Cliff Richard winning a High Court privacy battle with the BBC .
The Ribble Valley Tory backbencher said he hoped the singer's legal victory would lead to the media ceasing to identify those accused of sexual assault before they are actually charged with an offence.
Sir Cliff took legal action against BBC bosses over broadcasts of a 2014 South Yorkshire Police raid on his home in Berkshire following a child sex assault allegation.
Judge Anthony Mann said the BBC infringed the star’s privacy rights in a 'serious and sensationalist way', awarding him an initial £210,000 in damages.
Mr Evans said: "I am delighted. The BBC was appallingly arrogant.
Sir Cliff was never arrested or charged with anything.
"In advance on any legislation, I hope media organisations will cease to identify those accused of sexual offences before charge."
The BBC considering an appeal against the judgment.
