BLACKBURN Cathedral has released details of its commemorations of the end of the First World War.

On November 4 Blackburn Music Society will perform ‘The Armed Man’ by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins.

In November 8 the Cathedral will host a multi-media performance of ‘Brothers in Arms’.

To mark the actual date of the Armistice which ended the 1914/1918 conflict on Sunday November 11, there will be series of events starting at 6am when a lone piper outside the Cathedral will play 'Battle’s O’er - A Nation’s Tribute'.

At 9.30am there will be Civic Service for Blackburn followed by a procession to Corporation Park for the laying of wreaths.

At 10.40am the Cathedral will host a Eucharist, including Faure’s Requiem; at 11am there will be a two-minute silence followed by short peal of bell and the day will end with 'Battle’s Over – Ringing out for Peace' from 7:05 to 8pm.

The announcement comes after an independent report concluded the £40 million First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund, from which Blackburn was awarded £587,701 for roof repairs., has significantly reduced immediate risks the fabric of 57 of the historic buildings across England

The Dean of Blackburn, The Very Rev. Peter Howell-Jones, said: “Without the very generous support of the WW1 fund grants, the work undertaken would not have been possible."
