THIS view down King William Street shows the 20-year-old Blackburn Shopping Centre, considered at the time to be the height of modern retail, in the tun-up to East 1999.

Little did passers-by know that a decade later the complex would undergo a massive £66million redevelopment to become The Mall .

The revamped shopping complex, which open in 2010, now dominates the centre of the town and its skyline and its one of East Lancashire's main retail attractions compete with rooftop carpark and a market, opened in the basement in 2011.

In 2015 there was a further extension to The Mall with a grand new entrance on Ainsworth Street giving direct access to the new bus station and Cathedral Quarter.

Despite all the changes King William Street looks much the same as shoppers circulate in an out of the main centre.

Blackburn shopping centre was built in three phases, with the final one opening in 1979.

Debenhams was clearly visible n 1999 and despite recent high-street trading problems remains in place but repeated efforts to lure Marks and Spencer from King William Street into the shopping centre failed.

Who knows what shopping in Blackburn will look like 20 years further into the online retail age?
