THOUSANDS of men and women pounded the streets to raise much-needed funds for cancer research and other good causes as part of the annual Burnley 10K run.

With the sun shining and the weather warm, Burnley’s Towneley Park was the perfect setting for the Jane Tomlinson Run for All.

A mass warm-up led by Rebecca Mcdevitt from Burnley Leisure got the athletes ready for action before they set-off from the start line at the park.

Mayor of Burnley, councillor Charlie Briggs, who started the race and took part himself praised a ‘fantastic’ event.

He said: “It’s great to see all these runners come to Burnley and from further afield.

“Towneley Park really is the perfect setting and we’ve had the weather for it also.”

One of the runners was Amanda Whalley who lost her dad James Alan Dixon to prostate cancer in 2016, while her father-in-law Ian Whalley is currently in remission from the same disease.

Mrs Whalley, from Cliviger, who took part in the race with daughter Ella, 16, to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK, said: “I just want to raise awareness to help raise funds for this crucial charity, but most of all to encourage men like my dad to recognise worrying signs, visit the doctors, get checked and seek the help.”

Soutik Das, 24, from Burnley, ran in the event to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society, after he lost his grandmother Sarojini Mitra to dementia.

He said: "I was extremely close to my nan and want to raise awareness about dementia/alzheimer’s and fundraise for research."

Road closures were also in place during the event, including The Avenue, The Causeway, Hall Road, Jubilee Park Way, Park Bridge Road, and Queen Victoria Road.

The event saw money raised for various good causes and the event's partner charities, which this year were the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Macmillan Cancer Support, Pendleside Hospice, Burnley Leisure Trust, Burnley FC in the Community and Every Action Has Consequences.?
