A BRAVE roofer has been thanked by a senior fire officer for rescuing a frightened dog running along a row of terraced houses.

Tammy, a Patterdale terrier, was in an agitated state running along the roof of 26 homes in Blackburn Road, Oswaldtwistle, when the emergency services were called at 5.30pm on Saturday.

Watched by a crowd, a crew from Blackburn Fire Station attempted to lure the dog down but it nearly fell.

As they called for an aerial platform, self-employed roofer Lee Pilling emerged and grabbed it.

Watch officer Rob Birtwistle said: “We pitched a ladder to the rear and attempted to lure the dog to us using a neighbour’s treats.

"The dog was in a very agitated state and made its way along the full length of the row of 26 houses. It eventually proceeded to slip, nearly falling off the front, its claws catching on the guttering stopping it.

“Firefighters re-pitched the ladder to the front and were inches from the dog but it clawed its way back up.

"The dog, a black and tan Patterdale type terrier called Tammy, made its way back up the rear of the terrace to the top of the row. Firefighters re-pitched the ladder to the rear.

“A quick thinking passer-by stopped, made his way onto the roof via a neighbour's rooflight and managed to grab the dog using a lead. We'd like to thank Lee Pilling for his brave, quick-thinking actions.”
