A ROAD safety improvement scheme is to be launched in one of a borough’s ‘most dangerous roads’.

Hyndburn councillors have praised Lancashire County Council for proposing to design road safety improvements for Blackburn Road in Oswaldtwistle.

The road has been branded one of the most dangerous in the area due to the number of incidents in recent years.

County Hall bosses confirmed they are working on the design of the new road safety scheme following speeding traffic and dangerous incidents reported to them.

Cllr Glen Harrison said the road has been an issue in the area for as long as he remembers.

Cllr Harrison, who represents the St Oswalds ward, said: “It’s been a long time coming.

“It’s been an issue as long as I’ve been a councillor and beyond.

“Anyone who drives down Blackburn Road will see it for themselves.

“It’s one of, if not the most dangerous road in the area, cars just come hammering down.

“Because of the parked cars people are having to look out and take a leap of faith coming onto Blackburn Road from streets leading to it.

“The visibility coming onto the road is really poor, hopefully this scheme will help this.”

County Council highways bosses recorded between 2013/14 and 2015/16 Blackburn Road was the road with the most accidents in Hyndburn, with 63.

Incidents have continued since then and last year the Lancashire Telegraph reported on a car which crashed into a house.

Cllr Harrison also said he will be looking to contact PCSOs in the area to arrange a trip out with them to use mobile speed cameras to monitor speeds on the road.

County Council bosses have also pursued an extension of the waiting restrictions on the junction with the road and Norman Road.

The plans were approved by cabinet in April and work will begin ‘as soon as possible’.

The safety scheme will see them look to introduce measures such as pavement build outs and improved road markings to increase visibility.

A county council spokesman said: “There is a local safety scheme proposed for Blackburn Road which is currently with our design and construction team and is due to be consulted on in summer 2018.”
