WE were in St James's Street, Burnley, last week and first to the phone with the correct answer was Colin Cowgill.

Our image was taken in 1950, at the junction with Hammerton Street on the left and Curzon Street, which ran down the side of retail giant Marks and Spencer on the right.

Across the road was another big name in retailing at the time, FW Woolworth, and further along the road is the much-loved Victoria Theatre.

Known as The Vic, it opened in 1886 and provided a venue for many first class acts, throughout its history, including the star of the silent movies Charlie Chaplin.

During the last war it was used as a air raid shelter and as a temporary headquarters of the Sadler's Wells Theatre, after it came north to escape the blitz.
