MORE than 120 people were caught drink-driving as part of Lancashire Police’s Christmas drink-drive campaign.

A total of 3,247 breath tests were administered across the county throughout December, with 126 people failing the test or refusing to provide a specimen – resulting in a failure rate of 3.9% and a slight decrease compared to 2016.

In East Division, which covers Blackburn with Darwen, Ribble Valley, Pendle, Rossendale, Hyndburn and Burnley, there were 13 drug wipes administered and four of them were positive while 619 breath tests were taken and 40 were positive or failed to produce a sample.

Meanwhile in South Division, which includes Chorley, there were 16 drug wipes taken and 10 were positive while 1157 breath tests were administered and 38 were positive or referred or failed to provide a sample in the annual crackdown across the country into drink and drug driving.

Insp Andy Trotter, said: “Drinking or taking drugs when driving is unacceptable at any time of the year and our efforts to catch those responsible will continue in a bid to make our roads safer.

“Unfortunately 126 people still thought it acceptable to drink and drive risking their licence, jobs, lives and even worse putting others at risk.”
