DETECTIVES are appealing for witnesses after a group of men armed with weapons were involved in mass disorder in Blackburn town centre.

Police said they were called to Barton Street at 1am today to reports a group of men armed with baseball bats and golf clubs had made threats towards people in the area before damaging a number of cars.

Two men were injured in the incident.

The alleged attackers are said to have left in five vehicles and travelled towards West Yorkshire.

No arrests have been made and police are stepping up patrols in the area.

Det Cons Tony Roberts said: “First and foremost we would like to reassure members of the public that we are taking this incident extremely seriously.

"We are exploring the possibility that some of the parties involved may have been known to each other, however we have stepped up patrols in the area as a precaution while we establish exactly what has occurred, and why.

“As part of our investigation we would now like to speak to anybody who saw what happened and has not yet been spoken to by police.

"We believe the area around Barton Street will have been busy at that time and several people may have witnessed the incident unfolding. Similarly, we would like to speak to anybody who has information about those involved.”
