TWO men have been recognised at a national awards ceremony for their commitment to supporting ex-servicemen.

David East and Derek Alond, both former Army members, were nominated for a good neighbour award for setting up Blackburn’s Veterans Breakfast Club, aimed at reintegrating ex-servicemen back into the community.

The fortnightly event at Ferrier Court in Carluke Street welcomes former service personnel and their families to socialise and reminisce on their time in the services.

It is open to veterans who have served in all three military services with no age limit.

Mr East said: “It was a complete surprise to be nominated for an award. Coming from an Armed Forces background, you don’t expect any kind of recognition for what you do - you just get on and do it.

“I feel very proud to be part of this event and hear such humbling stories from across the country."

David Cowans, group chief executive of Places for People, who presented the awards, said: “They may not know it, but these people are making real differences to their communities and neighbours’ lives.

“They are everyday heroes and are truly deserving of the recognition.”
