CHORLEY boss Matt Jansen hailed the performance of Magpies loanee Nick Haughton after he scored a sensational goal in the 2-0 National League North win at Alfreton on Saturday.

Haughton hit a superb strike to win an FA Cup tie in front of the BBC cameras earlier this season but bettered it was a 60-yard effort in Derbyshire which had Jansen comparing the goal to David Beckham’s famous finish for Manchester United against Wimbledon on the opening day of the Premier League season in 1996.

He said: “It’s going to be shown around the world. Is it better than David Beckham’s? It was unbelievable. He was five yards inside his own half.

“He said he seen the keeper off his line a few times and he just wanted the chance.

“It seemed to take forever to go over the keeper’s head and into the goal but what a finish.

“I hope we can see it time and time again because it was a very special goal.

“He has been outstanding since he has been here and he has been great in the dressing room and the lads really appreciate him. His second goal was excellent to finish the game off.”

Haughton’s brace lifted Chorley into seventh and a place in the play-offs and Jansen is pleased with his side’s momentum ahead of the FA Cup fourth qualifying round clash with Boston United on Saturday at Victory Park (3pm).

He added: “Seven wins out of eight is remarkable form and we have to take that into the game against Boston and hopefully progress in the FA Cup.

“We were outstanding (on Saturday), we could have had eight or nine or 10. We controlled the game, we missed a penalty and had chance after chance.

“We were absolutely brilliant as a team.”
