A 21-YEAR-OLD suffering from a mystery illness has set up an online petition to improve conditions across the country for people with disabilities.

Zach Kerr, from Accrington, is campaigning to get accessible changing room facilities installed at all UK motorway service stations.

More than 750 people have so far signed the petition supporting him.

The student at Beaumont College in Lancaster was rushed to hospital as an 11 month old baby with a rash and after tests his condition was found to have worsened and he suffered brain damage and was left unable to move his arms and legs.

He has dealt with the condition his entire life, and he is now looking to improve facilities for other wheelchair users like

The 21-year-old from Howard Close said: "There are many disabled children and adults who, like me are wheelchair users and require suitable spaces and the assistance of a carer when needing toilet and changing facilities during long journeys

"At the moment there are very few such facilities on UK motorway routes and my parents often have to resort to changing me in a cramped and often dirty toilet floor or baby changing room.

"Over 1000 facilities are now in operation at tourist attractions, restaurants, museums and leisure centres in the UK, but hardly any exist on major travel routes."

Mr Kerr wants to see the petition delivered to members of parliament, including Prime Minister Theresa May and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Mr Kerr's condition means he is reliant upon an electric wheelchair and has to use a machine to help him speak. He is also fed through a tube.

He has been inspired to start the latest petition after facing the problem again when travelling on holiday to Swansea with his family last week.

His mother Kristianne Kerr said the petition was something her son was keen to get going and supports it.

The 41-year-old mother of two said: "It's something that we've had to deal with all his life.

"There are places around now where people like Zack can change, but there's nowhere near enough, especially on long travel routes.

"Sometimes he has to change on the toilet floor, its very unhygienic and demeaning.

"I always have to carry a roll mat and anti-bacterial wipes.

"We know there are going to be plenty of people around the country who face the same difficulties."
