PEOPLE across East Lancashire had to fight off poor weather conditions to celebrate the end of Ramadan with events for Eid ul Fitr.

Prayers were held at Corporation Park in Blackburn today but were cut short due to rain and they will continue tomorrow.

Eid Festival is set to take place in the Preston New Road park on Saturday and Sunday.

The family fun day will feature food, games, donkey rides, archery competitions and more.

Eid Prayer in the Park was also set to take place in Walverden Park, Nelson today but was cancelled due to rain.

Cake stalls, a free BBQ, bouncy castles and garden games were planned for the event but had to be shelved.

A ceremony was held instead at Muhammadi Masjid in Bracewell Street.

Community champion Faz Patel, from Blackburn, said: “It’s a happy time, it’s about integration and diversity.

“It brings the whole community together.

“It’s been a tough month for everyone especially with what has gone on in Manchester and London.

“For me personally it’s about spending time with friends and family and those who are really important.”

Also to mark the event the bishop of Burnley, Rt Rev. Philip North, has been invited to Masjid Ibrahim Mosque in Clegg Street for a service tomorrow.
