MARKS and Spencer is recalling its Chicken and Vegetable Soup 600g as a precautionary measure because of a taint caused by possible chemical contamination.

The high-street giant published a notice on the Food Standards Agency website warning there is a taint in the product caused by possible chemical contamination.

The product has a Use by date of 30 March and a unique code of 00711135.

A statement said: "The safety of our food is of paramount importance to Marks & Spencer and we take all issues regarding the production of our food extremely seriously.

"As a precaution, Marks & Spencer has removed Chicken & Vegetable Soup 600g from sale whilst we conduct investigations with our supplier.

"Customers should not consume the affected date code of this product and any customers in possession of this product can return it to their nearest store where a full refund will be given.

"No other M&S products are affected."
