CHILDREN from across the county have been visiting Blackburn to sing their hearts out.

Over the past week school choirs from across Lancashire descended on King George's Hall to perform seven nights of music.

The Sing Together project, called 'Thousands of Voices', is a collaboration between schools in the area and Blackburn Cathedral.

Led by the Cathedral Outreach team, the project has seen around 3,000 children sing in front of a combined audience of around 7,000 people.

Gill Fourie, head of Music Outreach at Blackburn Cathedral, said: “This week is the culmination of an incredible amount of hard work that has been taking place around the whole county.

"The amount of dedication and enthusiasm that is shown by all the children and staff is amazing and the support from our sponsors helps us bring this amazing concert series to life. We would like to thank them all."

Concerts began last Monday and the final show is set to take place tonight, with the venue having a night off last night.

Pupils rehearsed for weeks with their teachers and with support from the music outreach team ahead of the shows.

Schools from Blackburn, Darwen, Nelson, Clitheroe, Accrington and Burnley all took part.

The sing together project has been supported by a range of organisations including Blackburn Business Improvement District, Granada Foundation and more.

Harriet Roberts, manager of Blackburn BID, said: “We are thrilled to be supporting this large-scale event and hosting it in Blackburn.

"Thousands of people will be coming into the town over the next few days and we are keen to show them how Blackburn has been changing over recent years and welcoming them to a town with a new sense of vitality.”

The series of concerts has included several specially commissioned works by acclaimed authors and poets Paul Cookson and Miriam Halahmy.

Tonight's concert will take place from 6pm and people can buy tickets at www.kinggeorgeshall.com or by calling 0844 847 1664.

Tickets cost £5 for adults and 50p for under 16s.
