A MASTERPLAN is being drawn up for a significant revamp at a heritage railway station in East Lancashire.

Talks have been staged between Rossendale Council and East Lancs Railway (ELR) on a number of possible improvements for the terminus at Rawtenstall.

The Lancashire Telegraph understands that discussions are at an early stage but could see new canopies and minor extensions at the historic site off Bury Road.

Heritage rail bosses still have part of the canopy, which was salvaged from the former Oldham Mumps station, in storage and that has been earmarked for the scheme.

An updated layout, including new event areas and improved toilets, have been shared between the council and ELR.

Cllr Andy McNae, Rossendale Council’s tourism champion, said: “It is good to see this sort of development taking shape in Rawtenstall.

“Anything which encourages more people to visit the station, and spend more time in the town centre as well, should be welcomed.”

Railway board members have been told that, subject to planning permission being obtained and full funding being secured, the first phase of construction could begin next January.

Sarah Davies, the council’s business director, said in a cabinet report: “We have been working with East Lancs Railway on their future plans for Rawtenstall station.

“This has included seeking to secure further events using Rawtenstall as an activities location, and (providing input) to a future development plan including new canopies, improved toilet facilities and new events areas.”
