PRIMARY school children have written letters objecting to plans for a multi-storey car park near their school.

Pupils at St Anne's Primary School, Feilden Street, Blackburn, have sent 30 letters to express their concerns after the proposals were submitted this week.

Plans have been sent to Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council for a muliti-storey car park next to Blackburn College and across from the 264-pupil primary school and nursery.

The proposed carpark in Feilden Street is expected to have 550 parking spaces and access will be from an entrance in Feilden Street.

Headteacher Barbara Cuff said year six pupils held a debate where the proposals were discussed.

She said they also took part in a role play exercise and explored opinions of different people including, computers, pedestrians, those in authority.

Mrs Cuff said year five pupils had also carried out a traffic survey and found that 20 cars pass the schools perimeter every 10 minutes.

One year five pupil said: "We did a traffic survey as part of our school work and found that 20 cars pass the school every 10 minutes.

"It is busy when we are crossing the road after school now and if they build the carpark then there will be more traffic building up and I find it quite scary and I think it would be dangerous."

A year six pupil said: "We had the debate and we then we started writing letters, some of us were writing them during our break times.

"We talked about how different people would feel but then we wanted people to know what it would mean for us."

Mrs Cuff said: "I am proud they have taken such an interest in what is going on around them and speaking up. Some of the children have also said they are worried about people loitering around the carpark."

The letters will be submitted to Blackburn with Darwen Council as formal letters of objection.

In Blackburn with Darwen's planning application it states that "a new carpark in Blackburn town centre is needed to maintain the quantity and improve the quality of parking in the town centre to contribute to the economic vitality of the town centre".

The plans will be considered by the planning committee councillors who will decided whether they should be approved.
