A ‘DANGEROUS’ hole that was dug in March could get worse if it is left during the winter, a councillor has said.

Parish Cllr David Peat, who represents Simonstone, said the ‘eyesore’ in Whalley Road had been left untouched for months and had become an obstacle in the road.

Cllr Peat took the problem to Lancashire County Council and BT who he believed were behind the hole.

The issue has been discussed at the recent Simonstone Parish Council meeting where residents said they were concerned an accident could occur as a result of the hole.

Cllr Peat said: “It’s just getting a bit silly now, the hole has been there for so long.

“The road is rather busy and it’s quite narrow so cars do have to be careful to avoid it.

“It’s blocked off by fencing, but bits have fallen in on itself, it’s a real eyesore.

“The hole fills up with water pretty quickly and with winter now here, I’m worried the problem will only get worse.

“The hole could get bigger and then we could have a real issue on our hands.

“We have talked about it in meetings and we’ve not been able to find a way of getting it filled in.”

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “While investigating a problem with drainage at this location, we found that a pipe had been damaged, which appeared to have been caused during previous work on fibre optic cables by BT Openreach.

“BT has accepted responsibility for this and indicated that they will return to the site at a future date to repair the damage and reinstate the road.

“We will fill in the hole and make a temporary repair to the surface shortly.”

BT were not available for comment yesterday.
