The 16 days of activism began with a launch at the Wish Centre in Blackburn - the first point of contact for those experiencing domestic violence in the town.

It comes as all councils will be accredited making Lancashire the first White Ribbon county in the UK.

Shigufta Khan, chief executive of the Wish Centre, said: “The campaign urges men to sign the pledge and say they do not want violence against women to happen.

“It is about raising awareness of our services and what we can provide.”

One survivor Susan, 56, said she lived with her husband for 12 years before leaving after he attempted to assault her. He was eventually sent to prison.

“I still have days when I am really down and am still going through counselling,” she said.

“He took control of my cards and how much money I could have and what I wore. He used to give me £6 a day and that was all the money I had.

“I thought he was paying all the bills. Everything was in my name. I ended up in court for not paying bills. He wanted to know where I was at all times.

“I could not stop it. I did not realise what he was doing until it was too late.”

Another survivor, who was with her partner for five years from the age of 18, said she finally had the courage to leave when her son was taken into care.

“I was not allowed to go out or see my friends. He was funny about me seeing my family. It was emotional abuse. It is hard but I am focusing on myself and have gained confidence so I can be a better parent to my child.”

Clive Grunshaw, Lancashire’s police and crime commissioner, said: “Tackling domestic abuse is a key priority.” under my new police and crime plan and I am delighted that Lancashire will be the first White Ribbon county.

“This campaign is about raising awareness and getting men to step up and speak out against domestic abuse and I am proud to support this.”
