VILLAGERS are fed up with young people causing a nuisance on mopeds.

Complaints have been made of youths riding around Knowsley Road in Wilpshire without helmets and making noise until the early hours of the morning.

Police have now placed an order on the bike, which means it could be seized if found to be used in any other anti-social behaviour.

A resident said: “These last couple of weeks they’ve become a real problem on their mopeds. They are such a nuisance.

“We call them the Idiot Crew. Earlier this week it was getting to 12.25am and they’re just speeding round, it was causing such a noise.

“I question the parents. They need to know what their children are up to. They’re driving around without helmets, it’s dangerous.”

Residents said two mopeds were being used by a group of six in their late teens.

Leader of Ribble Valley Brough Council and Wilpshire ward representative Cllr Stuart Hirst said: “I am aware of problems going on in the area and I will be in talks with councillors and police.

“With any community anti-social behaviour like this it is just unacceptable. Residents who live on that road must be able to relax and feel enjoyment in their own homes.”

Police said they had received complaints from residents on the issue and had taken action.

PCSO Caroline Pemberton said: “We’ve been down and sorted the issue. We have placed a section 59 order on a moped and we’ve spoken to the parents of those involved.

“If there is anything else in the area or elsewhere I’d encourage people to just ring us. We’d rather know if these sort of problems are going on and people are unhappy.”

Complaints have also been made in the Accrington and Oswaldtwistle areas over nuisance bikes.

Police and crime commissioner Clive Grunshaw said: “I know this is a major concern, especially in the east of the county. Officers have been taking steps to catch riders involved in this behaviour in the act or identify them.”
