Blackburn magistrates heard a police officer saw Graham Monk drive over a roundabout onto Commercial Street in Great Harwood before colliding with a parked car.

He stopped briefly before moving off and then collided with another car 20 yards down the road. He again drove off, leaving debris in the road, before colliding with a bollard and coming to a halt.

Monk, 58, of Birtwistle Street, Great Harwood, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol. He was banned from driving for 25 months and fined £1,200 with £120 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

Malcolm Isherwood, prosecuting, said Monk gave a breathalyser reading of 97 against the legal limit of 35.

“His driving left behind a trail of destruction,” said Mr Isherwood. “The three collisions were witnessed by a police officer who said the defendant was clearly drunk when he got out of his vehicle. He accepted he was drunk and not fit to drive.”

Zabair Afzal, defending, said Monk had gone for a drink after work on a Friday and thought he had about eight pints. He was in a works vehicle and would normally have walked home and couldn’t explain why he didn’t on that night.

“He has lost his job with Network Rail as a result of this incident but has been fortunate enough to obtain another job almost immediately,” said Mr Afzal.
