A PET shop in Colne has provided the Downing Street cat with a new collar after he was involved in a fight with his new neighbour.

Larry, who lives at 10 Downing Street, has been sent a new collar by Stell’s Famous Pet Store, Norfolk Street, after they heard about his escapades with Palmerston, the foreign office feline.

Workers at the pet store felt inspired to act once they heard that Larry, aged nine, had his collar damaged.

Shop owner Peter Jagger said: “We’d seen a few stories in the press about Larry and Palmerston not getting on, and when we saw that Larry had lost his collar we thought we’d send him one.

“We had some fun with it and stuck it on Facebook. I did wonder whether we’d get a response, but I thought probably not.

“The fact we got a response, it was crazy.”

Larry has the title chief mouser to the cabinet office, and was initially appointed during the term of David Cameron.

Since new PM Theresa May has taken over, she decided that Larry would remain at his home.

However the cat has grown a reputation for it’s clashes with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office feline Palmerston, which resulted in the damaged collar.

After their generous gesture of sending a blue catalogue colour, the staff at the shop were delighted to receive a letter back from Downing Street, complete with pictures of Larry.

Mr Jagger said: “Once we sent the letter we thought that was that, we’d all had a bit of a laugh about it, and that was enough.

“Then one day I picked up the post and saw the window on the envelope and when I was opening it I thought it was just a bit of advertising rubbish, but when I turned it over and saw 10 Downing Street on it, I couldn’t believe it.”

The letter from 10 Downing Street came from The Events & Visits team and read: “Dear Stell’s, I am writing to thank you for the letter and gift that you recently sent to Larry which was very much appreciated.”
