NEIGHBOURS in Oswaldtwistle have called on council bosses to deal with overhanging trees that are ‘blinding drivers’ turning onto a main road.

Concerns have been made known to Lancashire County Council that bushes and trees are hanging over a turning on Stanhill Lane.

The shrubs, which are on land adjacent to White Ash School, are restricting motorists’ views when turning from Hargreaves Road and residents are adamant that they must be trimmed to make the roads safer.

Brian Jones, who lives in New Bury Road, said: “It’s really quite dangerous for anyone who is walking along Stanhill Lane either to get to White Ash School or Braeside care home.

“The trees are also blinding drivers to the dangers of turning from Hargreaves Road onto Stanhill Lane.

“I raised this concern with the council because the estate is full of young families and I don’t want to see anyone hurt.

“The hills on roads round here make you pick up quite a bit of speed as a driver, and these trees need to be trimmed to make things safer for everyone.

“Provided we can see clearly what is round the corner we won’t have any problems walking or driving around.”

Braeside Home for the Elderly site manager Theresa Rostron, reiterated Mr Jones’ worries. She also said the lane itself required maintenance and road works to improve access to the care home on the road.

Mrs Rostron said: “The trees are definitely overhanging which is causing issues for cars attempting to turn onto Stanhill Lane, and the bushes create very little walking space on the pavement.

“As Brian said, the road is on an incline and cars do shoot off which makes crossing the road potentially dangerous. For us the most important thing isn’t just getting the trees sorted but the road itself. When you step out from our home you’re straight into the middle of the road.”

A spokesman for the county council said: “We are aware of the issue which has been raised, and have contacted the school to take it forward.”
