THE family of murdered Helmshore businesswoman Sadie Hartley said they have nothing to say to her killers.

Sarah Williams and Katrina Walsh were yesterday found guilty of murdering the mother-of-two. But Miss Hartley’s daughter, Charlotte, who got engaged just days before her mother’s brutal death, said no sentence will make up for what they did.

Charlotte, 23, said: “My mum was a very caring, gentle, kind lady, always happy and incredibly trustworthy – just an all-over incredible woman.

“No sentence will ever be enough. Of course it wouldn’t. They might be in prison, but what’s prison when you haven’t got a mum and you’re out of prison? Nothing will make that feel better.

“I was in Hawaii on the holiday of a lifetime with my partner and his parents when I found out. We had been away for about 10 days when I got the phone call and I was in my hotel room.

“It was about 4am and it was one of the family liaison officers that called. It was my partner who heard the news. He really struggled to tell me so I obviously had to speak to the officer on the phone. You almost don’t know what to say. I could not believe it.

“I had just got engaged about three days before I got the phone call. So, I was from an incredible high to an incredible low.

“It was just indescribable. You obviously think it would never happen to you and at that moment in time all you want to do is be back home. But I knew she wasn’t going to be there.”

Miss Hartley, 60, came from a working-class background but went on to be a successful company director. She enjoyed horse riding and travelled the world following her passion. Her family said she also enjoyed skiing and socialising.

She was found dead by police in her £500,000 home in January, having been stabbed 40 times by Williams a day earlier.

Williams’ and Walsh’s imprisonment comes after a seven-week trial but Miss Hartley’s brother Graham, 63, said it has felt like his family were on trial at the same time. Mr Hartley, who described his sister as a ‘warm, loving, caring and unassuming woman’, said: “It has been very, very difficult. And what I have said to a lot of people it is a trial – a trial is the right word.

“But, it is not just a trial of the two accused, it is a trial of the family and friends and even the jurors who have to listen to all of that.

“With some of the evidence I have had to leave the court because I did not want to hear it and it has been very draining and very upsetting at times.

“All those days have been really hard, and it seems like a lifetime although it’s only a few weeks, but it is emotionally very draining.

“I have no messages for Sarah Williams or Katrina Walsh and I have no feelings towards those two women whatsoever. I just feel nothing towards either of them.”

Charlotte, who said she had nothing to say about her mum’s partner Ian Johnston, revealed her mum had been looking to retire from her role as a director of Hartley Taylor Medical Communications and spend more time with her and brother Harry.

She said: “She was definitely looking to retire and spending more time with myself and my brother. She wanted to horse-ride more and she was saying for many years that she wanted to retire.

“She just wanted to go on more holidays, enjoy family, wait for me to have family and obviously plan a wedding together, but that has all been taken away from her.”

Miss Hartley’s best friend and business partner, Julie Taylor, who raised the alarm when she went missing and gave evidence in court, added: “Sadie was a fun-loving person, whether she was at work, whether we were out socially, whether we were on holiday.

“My family, her family, our lives were just full of fun and Sadie made every day count, more so than most – more so than me.

“She would never have a time where she would probably just sit on the sofa watching the television. She had got many activities she liked to pursue and she really did make every day count,”
