A LONG-running headache concerning queue jumpers on one of the main routes out of East Lancashire into North and West Yorkshire is being given some light relief from this week.

Rogue motorists heading along Vivary Way in Colne, a popular commuter route between the red and white rose counties, often drive along the right-hand lane turning for the town centre, then attempt to cut back inside to avoid traffic jams.

Such manoeuvres have regularly resulted in minor bumps and near misses and road engineers from Lancashire County Council have signalled they about to take remedial measures.

It has long been a bugbear for patient drivers who follow the road rules properly.

In a letter to Pendle Conservatives, Phil Durnell, the county council’s highways head, said extra destination arrow markings have been provided along Vivary Way, for traffic leaving the M65 and heading to either West Craven, Skipton or the Keighley area.

The proposal is part of the North Valley Route Management project, as part of a number of potential measures to ease traffic conditions along the busy corridor.

Cllr Joe Cooney, Conservative group leader and Vivary Bridge representative, said: “I welcome the news that Lancashire County Council is taking steps to improve Vivary Way.

“I have seen first-hand vehicles undertaking and cutting in at the last second.

“It’s highly dangerous and frustrating for the vast majority of drivers that follow the law.

“I also hope the police will continue to take enforcement action against those who do break the law and cause inconvenience to other drivers.”

Previously the county council has also suggested the introduction of physical barriers, between the two lanes, to enforce lane discipline.

County councillor Paul White said: “Although Vivary Way isn’t in my division, lots of my residents use it on a daily basis to get to and from work.

“They wait patiently in the queue and its extremely annoying when irresponsible road users deliberately cut in.

“I will continue to put pressure on the county council to take more substantial action to deal with the issue for the long term.”

The right-hand lane serves an alternative route into Colne town centre along Crown Way, Rigby Street and Lord Street.
