A MOTHER and baby had to be taken to hospital after a two-car crash in Rossendale.

The crash happened in Bacup Road, close to Rossendale Police Station, at around 2.30pm this afternoon and involved a Honda Civic and a Peugeot 1007.

It was feared that the woman was trapped and firefighters were called, but police managed to get them out of the car without assistance.

Both the woman and baby, who were in the Honda, were taken to hospital.

The woman had neck and back injuries but a police spokesman said it was unclear whether the baby was injured.

The driver of the Peugeot was not thought to be seriously injured.

The road was partially closed for several hours to allow the emergency services to work safely and for an accident investigation to be carried out.
