A TEENAGER was last night fighting for his life after falling 50ft from a derelict school building in Burnley.

Kieron Simpson, 14, is believed to have been playing with friends when he fell from the roof of the old Habergham High School, off Kiddrow Lane, at 9.45pm on Saturday.

The Shuttleworth College student was taken by ambulance to Manchester Children’s Hospital where he remains in a critical condition, police said.

Amongst his injuries are a fractured skull, a collapsed lung, damaged liver, five broken vertebrae, fractured ribs and swelling on the brain.

His parents Julie Massie and David Simpson were yesterday (MONDAY) at his bedside.

His brother Allan Mason said he was being brought out of sedation and the family were waiting for him to wake up.

Mr Mason, 22, said: “The police rang my mum and dad and said Kieron had had an accident. They then told me.

“He was in the old Ivy Bank school playing a game called tracking with about 10 of his friends.

“Kieron didn’t want to go on the roof because he is scared of heights but his mates were egging him on.

“One of his mates went to tag him and he swerved to avoid him and fell straight off the roof from 50ft.

“He’s been on the grounds before but he’s never been on the roof because of his fear of heights. He won’t even climb on a two foot wall never mind a 50 foot building.

“He’s an intelligent lad and has his head screwed on. He’s good at maths and English and really loves PE and football.”

Mr Mason said the whole family, including sisters Chantele, Cherie and Paula, were ‘devastated and broken’ by the accident.

He said: “We’re all devastated and broken but we’re just trying to stay positive for Kieron.

“All his friends are shocked and they’re messaging each other trying to find out how Kieron is.

“He’s got lots of support and we’re all hoping he’s going to be okay.”

It is understood Kieron, of Sycamore Avenue in Burnley, was with other year 10 pupils from Shuttleworth College in Padiham when he fell.

The Burnley Road school headteacher Ruth England said everyone has been left shocked by the ‘upsetting incident’.

She said: “This is a very upsetting incident which has shocked all of us in the school.

“We have been in touch with Kieron’s family to offer our support and let them know that we are all thinking of them and sending our very best wishes for a speedy recovery for Kieron.”

Police are treating the fall as a ‘tragic accident’ and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Det Insp Alisa Wilson said: “This young man has suffered serious injuries.

“While detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fall, at this stage there is nothing to suggest this was anything other than a tragic accident.”

Anyone who witnessed the accident is urged to call police on 101 quoting log number 1549 of June 18th.
