A PET pot-bellied pig has been shot dead by armed police officers after it was savaged by two dogs in a back garden.

Police were called to an house on Thorburn Drive, Whitworth, at 2.15pm on Thursday, after receiving reports that two 'Staffie-type' dogs were attacking the pig in a back garden.

On arrival, officers separated the animals and found the pig had sustained horrific injuries and was in a highly distressed state.

Police contacted the RSPCA who attended - and local vets who were unavailable at the time.

Police said a decision was made to call in armed response officers, who destroyed the animal with the blessing of all parties involved.

The owner of the dog also agreed to both the animals being put down and later on Thursday the animals were destroyed at a vets in Manchester.
