AN army reservist from Burnley has received a top award for his 'exceptional commitment to his fellow soldiers'.

Private Sam O’Donnell, 27, who serves with Army Reserve unit 156 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps, was awarded Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant’s Commendation at a recent presentation.

It was made by Warren Smith, Lord-Lieutenant for Greater Manchester, during a ceremony held at Gorton Monastery.

Pte O'Donnell, a self-employed IT consultant in his civilian life, joined the Army Reserve after serving as an Army Cadet when he was younger.

According to his superior officers he has proven to be an extremely capable soldier, performing admirably across a variety of service activities.

However, his nomination for the Lord-Lieutenant’s Commendation was based upon his exceptional commitment to fellow soldiers in his unit.

Over a sustained period Pte O'Donnell, with the support of his family, has provided support to comrades facing difficulties outside of their reservist duties, displaying maturity, care and compassion.

He even opened his own home to accommodate a fellow solider in need.

In addition to his reserve service, he is also heavily involved in the organisation of his local rugby club and participates in charity events, last year raising a significant amount of money for local military charities.

He said: "I was shocked when I was told I was to receive this award, it was totally unexpected.

"I give my reserve service a high priority and take as many opportunities as I can to take part in activities, but I never expected to be awarded like this."

Colonel Mark Underhill, chief executive of the North West Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association which runs the awards, said: "The Lord-Lieutenant’s Awards give us an opportunity to recognise the selfless commitment and dedication of the men and women who serve in our nation’s reserve forces.

"Private O’Donnell has shown unwavering commitment and loyalty to his squadron and his regiment, and is wholly deserving of Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant’s Commendation."
