TOM Heaton is anticipating some “big moments” in the promotion race, but has backed Burnley to deal with whatever is thrown at them.

The Championship leaders suffered a minor setback against Wolves, conceding late to settle for a point and see their next opponents, Brighton, close the gap by two points.

But with eight games to go and a four-point lead goalkeeper Heaton feels the Clarets are very much in control of their own destiny, and will embrace it.

“That enjoyment of standing up and being a part of this together is great,” he said. “We had a minor kick in the teeth with the late goal but that’s part and parcel of football. You’ve got to look to go again.

“It’s football at the end of the day and you’re not always going to get things your own way, certainly not in a promotion race in this division. Anyone who thinks that would be daft.

“There’ll be plenty of big moments to come over the final eight games but it’s about how we handle them at the time and the reaction to them which will be important.

“The focus has just got to remain on us. I try not to get sucked in to watching anybody else around us.

“The important thing is that we concentrate on our job and get that right. We don’t want to get involved in things happening elsewhere that we can’t control.”

And Heaton expects a positive response from the Clarets camp to the disappointment of being held to a late draw at Turf Moor.

“There’ll be no glum faces about; we’ll be back and ready to go,” said the stopper, who earned an England recall for friendlies against Germany and the Netherlands following injury to Manchester City’s Joe Hart.

“Sometimes in football, depending on the circumstances, you can get sucked in to doom and gloom a little bit but the bigger picture is that we’re unbeaten again and it’s a measure of how far we’ve come.

“It’s another point on the board. It was a tough game, they played well, parked the bus at times, tried to catch us on the counter and created a few half chances.

“It was a tight game, not a lot in it, and they stopped us playing. They negated us very well.

“I thought we scored a great goal it was just an unfortunate circumstance where in injury time they’ve scored with a very good header. It’s not the end of the world, it’s another point on the board and another game unbeaten. Even though we want to be winning them, we’ll take the point and move forward.

“It’s a big game (at Brighton) and one that we’re looking forward to.

“They’re obviously a decent side at the top end of the table but we’ll be focussing on ourselves and looking to go there and get a win.”
