DRIVERS have expressed their anger at the changes made to a major Blackburn roundabout after the second crash in two days.

The Guide roundabout which leads onto junction five of the M65 was brought to a standstill following the latest incident yesterday morning.

Traffic was slow from junction five onto Haslingden Road and was also affected in Elton Road and Sough Lane after the two car crash at the Guide traffic lights, close to The Willows pub.

Police were called to the scene by the North West Ambulance Service at around 8am after the crash between a Ford and a VW Golf.

Eyewitness Alex Chadwick said: "Yet again this morning I was stuck on the hard shoulder of the motorway trying to get off at junction five on the M65. Traffic was at a standstill.

"After 20 minutes, when I approached the new Guide traffic lights there had been, from what I could see, another smash which did not look good and brought the whole area to a standstill.

"Blackburn with Darwen Council need to urgently review the layout of these light before someone is seriously hurt or dies.

"No-one knows where to go when at the lights, the traffic filters do not work in the correct times and the road markings are not easy to understand.

"I dread driving through these lights at least twice a day and have near misses myself.

"Blackburn with Darwen Council please sort this out for everyone sake."

On Monday, Haslingden Road was partially blocked in both directions at the Blackamoor Road junction after an accident between a silver Mazda 2 and a Black Hyundai IX35.

Work on the two-pronged £3million improvement scheme to Blackburn's Haslingden Road corridor and M65 Guide roundabout started in September 2014 with the aim to end the traffic 'nightmare' from the motorway and on the Grane Road through Belthorn.

The scheme in Haslingden Road included the widening of the road between the Guide roundabout and the M65 junction five to provide two lanes in both directions.

It also involved the full signalisation with traffic lights of the roundabout at junction five of the M65 at Guide.

Florence Butcher said on Facebook: "Should have kept it a roundabout, just seems like there are constant accidents.

"Caught one driver on dash-cam the other week reversing back into main road after taking the wrong turning.

"The traffic barely flows at peak times. Only a matter of time before a more serious accident happens."

However Cllr Salim Mulla, who represents the area on Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: "The changes have alleviated the major problems that were there before and the traffic is flowing much better.

"I blame the carelessness of the drivers rather than the traffic scheme itself."
