TODAY'S Looking Back photograph shows a scene in Westhoughton town centre.

For many years Westhoughton was a town in its own right with no need to answer to anyone, including the powers that be in Bolton.

It has a rich history of spinning, coal mining and textiles although those industries are no longer sustaining the people who live in the area.

Its shops included just about everything the local residents needed including bakers, butchers and greengrocers.

There was a time when local residents had no need to travel into Bolton for their shopping as everything was to hand, including a very popular little market.

Shopping would be done on a daily basis before the days of large supermarkets and the ability to get to them in cars. Westhoughton town centre was a bustling place where people would meet for a chat as they went about their chores.

Perhaps you have memories of Westhoughton in the past that you would like to share with us.

We know many of our readers have lived there all their lives and will have interesting tales to tell,
