NEW Blackburn Rovers boss Paul Lambert has identified the need for his side to be better in possession in today’s Ewood Park encounter with Sheffield Wednesday.

Lambert was pleased with many aspects of the performance Rovers produced in winning a typical derby with Preston North End last Saturday.

But, ahead of his first home game in charge of the club, the former Borussia Dortmund, Celtic and Scotland midfielder believes there is room for improvement on the ball.

Lambert said: “I think there are a lot of things we can work on. For one I think we’ve got to take more care when we have the ball.

“But work-rate and application, can’t fault it. The pressing was excellent and will get better.

“But I think on the ball we have to be better than what we were at Preston.

“Have we the players to do that? Of course, there’s some real talent here, there’s no two ways about it.

“But you’re always trying to strive to improve things, and that’s what we’ll try and do.

“We’ll try and make them better, and try and make them better on the ball.

“But as long as you don’t lose the basic of the hard work that goes with it, then there won’t be too many people questioning their commitment to the club.”

And Lambert added: “All the lads in training have been excellent for us.

“I’ve never sat back and thought, ‘he’s not really at it’. They might not sometimes have a level of high performance in training, but the work ethic is there. That’s the pleasing thing.

“The next day they’ll come and they’ll perform great but regarding training, application has been really pleasing.”
