And now the 29-year-old from Foulridge has earned a commendation in a folk music spectacular in the mountain resort of Taebaek, with her rearranged version of the old Appalachian number ‘Black Is The Colour’.

Evonne, who is head teacher of a private English school in Seoul, said: “Everyone was amazing. There were singers from every continent and we had a fantastic time.”

The event was broadcast on Korean TV through the KBS Network and audiences enjoyed performances from musicians representing countries including China, Yemen, Pakistan, Malawi, Rwanda, Colombia, Argentina and Russia.

Not only was she given an “Expressor” commendation, she also received a £500 prize for her artistic expression skills. She was also the only solo singer to be named a ‘Taebaek Cultural Representative’.

The former Colne Park High and Clitheroe Royal Grammar student has sung with Nelson Civic Primary Choir, Pendle Youth Choir, as well as her own school choir.

She has also competed at the Luther Greenwood festival every year between the ages of 10 and 18, before she returned last December to claim the Telegraph Rosebowl prize, alongside the John Crabtree Shield for the Pendle competitor with the highest marks from judges.

Evonne added: “I always loved singing at Colne Festival whether I won or not. My music teacher, Judith Briscall, was brilliant and encouraged me a lot. Colne is a great festival and really helped me as a singer.”

This year’s festival starts on Saturday with junior music classes and adult choir classes at Colne Muni, and speech and drama classes at St John’s Church.
