A WOMAN who was shocked by the images of a dead refugee infant being carried off a Turkish beach is pulling out all the stops to collect cash for Save the Children.

The One More Person fundraiser – which takes place at the Hare and Hounds in Briercliffe this Saturday – is the brainchild of chartered accountant Stacy Gouhar.

The 31-year-old from Hapton explained: “The morning that little boy washed up on the beach and it was all over the news and social media, my heart absolutely broke.

“I didn’t want to just be another person talking about it – I wanted to do something to try to make a difference. I had the idea to contact a few friends who have businesses to see if they’d like to donate raffle prizes. Their generosity was massive.”

Stacy set about printing raffle tickets, but was told she had to put the location and time of the draw on them.

She added: “That gave me the idea of a small fundraising event. So I got in touch with Tess Atkinson James, who I used to go to Burnley Youth Theatre with, and she has been amazing at getting acts to perform.”

The event runs from 4pm until 10pm. Bands include Bad Cardigan, Gary Leonard & Tristesse James, Martyn Green and The Helen Green Dance Company, and there will be face painting and a bouncy castle too.

Tickets cost £3, with one child free per paying adult. There will be a small number on the door, but people are advised to buy in advance.

Stacy added: “If I can sell all 800 raffle tickets it will bring in £1,600 for Save the Children. Hopefully we can sell a few event tickets on the day and top this up to nearer the £2,000 mark.”
