A dog walker has died after his pet bolted across a road into the path of a car.
The man, aged in his 60s, was walking his dog on a lead in Dovercourt, Essex, when the animal dragged him into the road.
He suffered head injuries after the incident in the Low Road area between 7pm and 8pm.
The man went home but felt increasingly unwell and was later taken to hospital where he died, Essex Police said.
Detective Sergeant Dave Jones said: "A man has sadly died following this incident and I'm appealing to the woman driving the car to urgently get in contact with us so we can find out what happened.
"I'm also keen to speak to anyone who saw the dog walker, before or after the incident.
"He was walking his dog which is similar to a Pug. The dog is safe and unharmed."
The driver stopped at the scene to obtain the dog walker's details before driving off.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 101.
