A SCHOOL has marked the completion of a three-year, £6.2m construction project.

A family fun day was held at West Craven High School on Saturday and comes after the school’s buildings and grounds had been transformed.

The scheme, funded and overseen by Lancashire County Council, has culminated with a new 3G pitch opened last week.

The pitch will be used by both West Craven and Barnoldswick CE Primary School during the day and will be available for community use in the evenings.

County Councillor Matthew Tomlinson, cabinet member for children, young people and schools, said: “This has been a major investment, several years in the planning and delivery, which has completely transformed the school.”

The project has been carried out in several phases and includes an extension next to the hall which will house new art, textiles and music spaces, a technology suite and a number of general teaching classrooms.

There is also a new main entrance to the school and secure reception area.

Refurbishment works have taken place in several other curriculum areas within the existing building including the complete modernisation of the science, food technology, drama and IT facilities.

Craig Baker, head teacher of West Craven High School, said: “The new buildings and facilities are excellent and I am very pleased that we have completed this major project.

“As well as looking great, the really important thing is that these improvements will greatly enhance the learning experience for our pupils for generations to come, as well as benefitting local people.”

Cllr Tomlinson said: “Not only will future generations of pupils benefit from these improvements, but the new 3G pitch is a fantastic sports facility for schools and local people.”

The school will hold an open evening for prospective new pupils and parents on Wednesday, October 21, from 6pm to 8pm.
